One Day Introduction to Silver Metal Clay
Date: Sunday 22nd March 2015
This beginners class is for anyone who is new to working with metal clay and would like to spend an exciting day experimenting and learning new techniques. It is a fascinating material which gives you amazing artistic freedom. Silver metal clay is a clay based substance containing millions of tiny silver particles. When you fire the clay on gas or under a torch or in a kiln all of the clay binder burns away and you are left with solid silver – it’s extremely satisfying! The silver clay is classed as Fine silver, which has the stamp 999 (99.9% pure silver) and can be hallmarked at any UK assay office.
One of the great advantages to working in metal clay is that it is relatively easy to continue working at home after the class without a big investment as you don’t need many tools or equipment.
Techniques covered in this class include:
– Rolling out the clay to a consistent thickness
– Texturing and cutting out shapes
– Methods of refining the dry pieces – sanding and drilling
– Firing your pieces using a small butane torch, gas hob & kiln
– Adding multiple layers of clay
– How to polish and finish your pieces
During this fun and informative day you will be guided through the technique of handling, shaping, forming and firing three different pieces of silver clay jewellery including earrings, charm and a pendant. These pieces are yours to take home with you.
We generally follow three projects throughout the day which include:
– Adding multiple layers of clay and setting fireable CZ stones
– Create a small charm using moulding compound
– A pair of earrings/charms for those with un-pieced ears
However, there is also lots of flexibility in terms of design and experimentation. By the end of the day you should have enough skills to go away and start making things from home. All materials are included in the class as well as full class notes.
All materials are included in the cost of the class. The classes are all run by Sara Wordley an experienced Level one Art Clay Instructor who is friendly, knowledgeable and approachable. You don’t need to bring anything but yourself and some ideas. * Lastly we use Play Doh to try out design ideas and this does contain wheat so please let me now if you have a wheat allergy and I will find an alternative.
We will take a lunch break and there is a wonderful café at Sun Pier House as well as plenty of local shops nearby to get food from, or you can always bring a packed lunch to eat in the studio. If you have any questions regarding this or other courses please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Pre-booking is required. Cancellation less than 7 days prior to the course or on the day, no refund will be given but I will try to place you on an alternative course at a later date. I accept cheques, paypal and bank transfer.
