Our Visit to UCA Canterbury…

Tuesday 12th January 2016 (The morning)
– Rachel Dodson is our new gallery intern here at Sun Pier House. She is a recent graduate form the University of the Creative Arts with a degree in Fine Art. Rachel is working with me taking lead on the Contemporary Open 2016. Alongside curator Matt Bray, she is striving to curate an exciting show of contemporary artwork from breakthrough artists from across the UK and beyond. –
Last Tuesday me and Rachel visited the UCA Canterbury Campus to give a lecture to fine art students about The Contemporary Open Exhibition 2016. The deadline to submit artwork is on the 31st January and our aim is to establish the gallery as a contemporary art venue this year. #TCO2016 is an open call exhibition aimed at contemporary artists, designers and makers.
Last year’s Contemporary Open had a successful participation of artists and this year we are looking to broaden our community of exiting breakthrough artists and designers from all walks of life. This is why we feel that budding artists and students will be the perfect candidates.
On the morning of our visit last week we used the ‘Kirk Lecture Theatre’ to do a lecture where we spoke to fine art students about the exhibition, why and how they should apply. Around 30 people turned up for the lecture all of them took an application form on their way out. The lecture was a great success, people where keen and showing a whole lot of interest already.
A lot of students, being old and young, approached us to ask further questions about the show and the residency. As some people said they are approaching deadlines and working on their stressful dissertations, they wasn’t too sure on entering their work… but when they found out just how cheap it was they soon changed their minds and sounded willing to grab the opportunity whilst its here. Even if they’re showing some old work, if it suits what we’re looking for… we’ll take it!
Me and Rachel have now been asked to visit UCA Rochester on the 26th Jan and The University of Kent on the 2nd Feb… see you around.
