Jio Butler

Artist Statement:
“Graphic designer by day, artist of general creative tomfoolery by night! I like to experiment with different styles and techniques; moving between digital and traditional mediums to create illustrations for both personal and commercial purposes.
When my eyeballs are not glued to my ipad screen I like tearing up bits of paper, gluing it back together and scribbling all over it. I also occasionally vomit acryla-gouache paint onto wood board.
I enjoy working with bright, bold and clashy colours, creating an eye-bleeding visual assault that leaves the viewer mildly disoriented, a factor I purposefully employ because reality sucks anyway. Recently, I have been experimenting with illustrating in mono, focussing on marks and texture to create depth and variation.
My style leans towards the fantasy-gothic-whimsical with influences from Fighting Fantasy books, animated films, indie comics, and my own brand of spirituality, Chaos Magick.
I am deathly allergic to creating anything that resembles something that has already been done before, and my thirst for a unique creative identity has been the driving force behind my practice since I first started disappointing my parents by aspiring to be an illustrator.“

Sun Pier Resident Since: 2023
“Ever since joining the residents at Sun Pier House my creative work has flourished. I have met so many interesting people and observed a variety of different creative practices that have influenced or inspired my own projects. Working in a shared room with other professionals means I am encouraged by other creatives. The view is pretty neat, too!”
