Zine Club

Sun Pier House Zine Club is a relaxed, creative workshop series celebrating DIY publishing, storytelling, and community creativity. Throughout the year, the club brings people together to explore ideas through zine making, collage, drawing, and writing.

Held four times a year, each seasonal session offers a welcoming space to experiment with creative expression. Participants can reflect on personal experiences, respond to changing seasons, or explore new ideas within their community.

Above all, the Zine Club encourages creativity that is accessible, playful, and open to everyone.

What Is a Zine?

A zine (short for magazine or fanzine) is a small, self-published booklet. Zines are often handmade using simple techniques such as folding, collage, drawing, photography, and creative writing.

Historically, zines have been used by artists, musicians, activists, and communities to share ideas and tell stories outside traditional publishing. Because of this, they often reflect personal perspectives, niche interests, and grassroots culture.

Importantly, there are no strict rules when making a zine. Some are visual and collage-based, while others focus on poetry, storytelling, or photography. As a result, every zine is unique.

Seasonal Creative Workshops

The Sun Pier House Zine Club takes place four times a year, with each session loosely inspired by the season and the evolving life of the local community.

Each workshop introduces a theme or creative prompt. However, participants are always encouraged to interpret the idea in their own way. For example, they might explore:

  • Personal stories or memories
  • Local events or community life
  • Nature and seasonal changes
  • Creative experimentation and visual storytelling

In this way, every session becomes a snapshot of the moment, capturing what people are thinking about and experiencing at that time.

What Happens in a Zine Club Session?

Each Zine Club workshop includes several stages. First, participants are introduced to zines and examples of different styles. This helps spark ideas and shows the many ways a zine can be created.

Next, there is a brainstorming and discussion period. Participants can sketch ideas, write notes, or experiment with collage before starting their project.

Afterwards, the main creative session begins. During this time, participants design and build their own zine using materials such as magazines, coloured paper, pens, and craft supplies.

Finally, the workshop ends with an optional sharing moment. Participants can show a page or idea from their zine and discuss their creative process.

A Space for Creative Community

The Zine Club is designed to be welcoming, informal, and supportive. It is open to beginners, experienced artists, and anyone curious about creative publishing.

Because of this, the workshops attract a mix of participants. Some people come to experiment with new ideas, while others enjoy documenting personal stories or local experiences.

Over time, the club helps build a small creative community around DIY publishing and collaborative creativity.

Why Zines Matter

Zines remain a powerful form of creative expression. They are affordable to make, easy to share, and completely independent.

In addition, zines encourage people to slow down and reflect. Through drawing, writing, and collage, participants can turn everyday moments into something tangible and meaningful.

At Sun Pier House Zine Club, the goal is simple:

to create a space where people can experiment, connect, and publish their own ideas.
