A space for ideas and art in Chatham
Welcome to Sun Pier House
We’re a not-for-profit organisation, working to support artists and creative industries in Medway.
Sun Pier House CIC was formed in 2013 to support Medway’s unique creative culture. We offer a base for established and start-up artists to develop their practice, and we deliver a varied exhibition and arts programme.
Split over three floors our art space is home to artist studios, an exhibition gallery, events space, hire rooms, cafe and workshop space – all enjoying a glorious panoramic view of the River Medway.
From all of us at Sun Pier House, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS!
While the building has been closed to the public, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to plan exciting new projects for 2025.
We are thrilled to announce three projects that are all part of our mission to support Medway’s creative industries, build community connections, and celebrate our riverside heritage.
Keep an eye on your inbox and our social channels for more details and upcoming events!
We can’t wait for you to be involved — there’s something for everyone!
300 Steps To The River
Sun Pier House and Tiller & Wheel are thrilled to announce a ground-breaking collaborative new arts programme – 300 Steps To The River
This project has been selected as one of eleven Creative Estuary co-commissions to celebrate and enrich six towns along the Thames Estuary in 2025.
‘300 Steps To The River’ invites residents to explore, create, and connect with Chatham’s town centre and its proximity to the River Medway. This ambitious programme aims to deliver 300 activities and events, culminating in our popular Festival of Chatham Reach in September 2025.
Thank you to Creative Estuary and huge congratulations to everyone in this year’s cohort, we cannot wait to get started!
Riverside Connections
Sun Pier House and Intra Arts are joining forces, as a new community partner for Vistry and Hyde Housing.
Together, over 3 years, we will design and deliver a new arts programme specifically for the residents and communities of the Rochester Riverside development.
This is the first project of this nature for us, and we’re so happy to have a long-term commitment that gives us the scope to develop something really wonderful and embedded with the residents, school and businesses.
Using our knowledge of the Medway arts community, the High Street businesses, local heritage and the river… It’s fair to say we’re buzzing with ideas.
Watch this space!
Shoregate
Sun Pier House’s sister organisation, Tiller & Wheel, has achieved a huge milestone by becoming the owner of its own wharf!
After running our own businesses for over 14 years, we’ve learnt how owning your own buildings and land can really set you apart and build a confident, sustainable future. It’s something we’re always striving for at SPH, but are yet to achieve (we rent our building).
Operating under our own terms, and developing a site for the purposes of the communities we serve, is an exciting new chapter for Tiller & Wheel. With undoubted benefits to our art and community networks in Medway (did someone say artist residencies?)
A place to test ideas
We have a large Gallery, Cafe and dedicated Community Hire Space available to host all types of events, classes, workshops, meetings, celebrations…
