“Sun Pier House gives me a space where I can concentrate, without distraction on my art. It is a great place to have a studio.”

Artist Statement:

“Since 2017, I have been based at Sun Pier House, working as a painter and illustrator in Kent. My practice centres on oil painting, alongside drawing in pen and pencil on both canvas and paper.

Originally born in Shropshire, I studied Art in Shrewsbury and later in Newport, South Wales, before completing teacher training in North London. Following this, I taught Art in secondary schools across London and Kent. In addition to teaching, I worked as a senior moderator for a national examining body and served for a time as National Secretary of the Artists’ Union. Throughout these professional roles, I continued to develop my own artwork; today, however, I focus exclusively on my studio practice.

Much of my work is inspired by the local environment in and around the Medway Estuary. In particular, I explore both rural landscapes and urban settings, as well as the people who inhabit these spaces. Recently, my attention has turned towards the intricate details of natural forms, studying pattern, texture and structure at close range. By working with a limited colour palette, I create a sense of harmony and atmosphere within each composition. Using oils on canvas, I build up layered surfaces to achieve depth, subtle tone and a strong connection to place”
